from £1689We stay in Zadar, which is at the heart of the coast and is one of the country’s most unique resorts. Known for its ancient history and breath-taking seaside location, you can soak up centuries in seconds just by strolling around. Amongst the traffic-free cobblestoned streets in the Old Town are ancient Roman ruins and historical churches, including the early-Byzantine St. Donatus’ Church and the Roman Forum.
Zadar's central square is essentially an outdoor museum, where you can find historic buildings like the 11th-century Church of St Lawrence and the 16th-century Clock Tower.
On the seafront, the resort is also home to two unique attractions, both of which were designed and created by architect Nikola Bazik; At first glance, the Sea Organ looks like a series of steps leading into the sea – it’s actually a huge musical instrument. There are hollow tubes underneath the marble steps that make music when the waves pass through them, creating a harmonica-like effect. The other is the Sun Salutation; it’s a 22m-wide circle set into the pavement filled with 300 multi-layered glass plates that collect the suns energy during the day which then produces a fascinating light show from sunset to sunrise with a complicated pattern of coloured lights across the floor. There are also smaller discs scattered across the plaza, which represent the solar system- both of these fascinating attractions need to be seen and heard more than once during your holiday!
Zadar's seafront has also been an inspiration for filmmakers and it’s not hard to see why - Alfred Hitchcock holidayed in Zadar in the 1960’s and he described the sunset over the Adriatic as the world’s best.
Admire the views from the promenade, relax on the beach and enjoy our programme of included excursions and visits on this unique, escorted holiday to discover some of the lesser known/hidden Splendours of Croatia.
